Are we Too Dependent on Technology?

I am going to try to write about some different topics than just sports, topics that are controversial and topics where both sides can easily be seen. Leave a comment and let me know what you think! Pointers and good graces are always acceptable!

Are we too dependent on computers?

In my own life, (I am a 21 year old college student going to school for sports journalism) I spend just as much time writing and updating my sports website as I do with my girl friend (and I thank her for putting up with that). Facebook, Yahoo and sites like this are HUGE in the career I want to have.

If it weren’t for Facebook I never would have been able to start my own sports website and gain a fan base when no newspapers, TV shows or radio shows would give me a chance. To be fair I wouldn’t have given myself a chance either. I was a young inexperienced writer whose biggest stories were posted in his high school paper and was trying to get a job at major corporations… No way. Digital media allows me to do what nobody else gave me the chance to do; which is write about what I like, and what entertains me. If I ever get paid for it I will be the luckiest man on Earth.

Aside from giving you my personal life story the point I am trying to make is that digital media gives people the chance to do what would have never been feasible before. For people like me it gives the chance to widen knowledge, improve skills and meet people who would never be accessible otherwise.

There is a down side to digital media, which is too strong to ignore. If I didn’t have a computer I would probably spend twice as much time outside playing sports as I do today. This isn’t any different for any other person ages 5-55. A recent article online talked about a young adult that died from a blood clot he got while playing x-box for too long. If we aren’t careful this next generation of kids could be known as generation obese. This is an entire article in itself, so I won’t go on and on about it. From obesity to child predators and scam artists, if you aren’t careful technology could just as well be the death of you.

There are negatives, but the Internet generates just as much money if not more than any other venue does. It provides people the chance to interact in new and unique ways, and allows people like you and I to share our lives and our stories with each other when we would have never been given the opportunity to do so otherwise. I’m writing about this topic because I want to know what everyone else thinks; because in no way shape or form do I consider myself an expert. So leave a comment and let me know if you agree or disagree, and why! Thanks for reading!

I voted for her piece because I thought it was good writing, actually earlier today. But I would only want your votes if you like what I write. If you do, awesome and thanks for the support!

Dfallis I am sorry they are doing this. I did not realize they were making comments on posts like this. I will have them stop this. I think you are right in what you are saying and I am sorry they left a comment like this on Clayton's post. I think they have read other posts from other people asking to come to their blog and read their posts. I think they got the wrong idea on this one. I will make sure they stop this and do not do it anymore. I am sorry this has happened. Clayton I am sure they voted becasue they liked your post and not for any other reason. I do not hink they give votes just to have people read my posts. I can not see how this one will help at all. I am happy that you did find my post interesting and I would like to say thank you for voting. I have just read your post and I do like it very much. I have voted for you. I hope they will not leave too many comments such as this around here. It is not the right way to ask people to read my work. I want people to read what I write becasue they want to. Not to think that my friends will try and make people vote for me if they do not like what I have written. Again I am sorry for this and will have them stop.

Good points and welcome to goodblogs. Gardening. Aside from bowling, I love to do work in the garden--pretty sure that's a middle-age thing--and sometimes, I do feel too-tied to my computer. The rest of it, with the exception of Wii golf, I can do without and it can do without me. I am unable to manipulate a good many games on our Wii system. There was a time when my husband and I enjoyed movies, but lately, we cannot make it through a whole movie without snoring...LOL...Voted!

First of all I think you are a very good writer and secondly, you are right on in your points. I am glad we have technology and wonder how I would have survived without it. I am sure I would have been fine it's just so much easier with computers, scanners, faxes, cell phones and on and on. Please consider a viewing my newest post "Are you a mandated reporter?" I look forward to reading more of your work

A well-written, thoughtful piece. As a former English prof, I must give one pointer in punctuation: your introductory phrases and clauses need to be followed by a comma. For example, "Aside from giving you my personal life story(insert comma) the point I am trying to make is that digital media gives people the chance to do what would have never been feasible before." and "If it were not for Facebook (insert comma) I never would have been able to start my own sports website and gain a fan base when no newspapers, TV shows or radio shows would give me a chance." As for my relationship with technology, we don't have cable; we only watch movies occasionally. I don't have a smart phone and can't check emails or go online using my phone. I have limited texting. While I find what technology I do use to be helpful in networking and gathering information and find that technology often makes life easier, once foreign things more accessible, I would much prefer a face-face chat in a coffee house with the aroma of chai and espresso to online chatting any day. And I don't think more or easier which technology seems to make available is always better. Welcome to GoodBlogs, Clayton!

Thank you for the edits! I always put in too many commas so I have been trying to cut back on them.. Maybe I did too much! That's a good point, sitting down and talking to someone is always a better way to get to know them, but for now this works! Thanks for reading.

Clayton I have voted for your post becasue I like it very much. I would like to say welcome here to GoodBlogs. I am new here like you are. My Mother was here before and something happeend. I am not sure but I would like to try and just write here that is all. I hope that what ever happened with the break in to my Mother's computer can be forgotten and I can fit in here and just write. That is all I care about. If this is a problem that some of my friends came here to read and look around and vote I will ask them to stay away. I do not want to have a problem with others here.

Clayton, This is a great topic question and you are a very good writer. I think you could have made it a little better by putting in more facts or personal opinions on the topic, but the prior comments are proof alone that the posting was great the way it was. My opinion on the subject is I do think people are too dependent on technology. I spend 8-9 hours a day on a computer for work and besides that I am always on my blackberry either texting someone, checking Facebook, looking something up on the internet or any of the other million things you can do on a phone nowadays. Along with that, my computer at home is always on to fill in for anything my blackberry can't do because it is too slow or too small. However, even though I know that I am too dependent, I refuse to be less dependent on technology due to the fact that I do not want to fall behind. I think it is safe to say that the majority of people, at least in this country fall into the same category as I and nobody wants to spend 10 seconds writing out a math problem when you can spend 2 on a calculator. Who wants to write out a letter by hand, find an envelope, buy a stamp and wait a week for a response when you can call, text, email or facebook the person and get the same result in 20 minutes? When you get a research assignment, do you really want to go to the library and search through hundreds of thousands of books to find one that is useful, then handwrite the info you need out of it and all the sited information? I don't think people even realize that the libraries are filled with technology too. If you actually went to the library, you wouldn't search through hundreds of thousands of books, you would sit at a computer, do some searching in a database and it would tell you right where the needed book is and if it is even available or not. Then when you found the book, you would scan or copy the pages you want and just attach them to the back of your research paper. The world did manage without all of this technology, and I believe more people were more intelligent then because they had to do so much more to get the results they wanted. If they wanted to know something, they couldn't pull out their blackberry, type it into Google and call it good, they had to research. This reasearch is what lead to our technology today. Now, I would never say our population is dumb, because we come out with new technology everyday and are always improving, but "back in the day" it took so much more effort. People are getting lazy and I do believe it was mentioned above that technology has been directly related with the increase in the populations obesity. Alright, well that is all I have for now. Thanks for the great topic Clayton.

Thanks for the comments, I think the library point is my favorite. It points out that everything is involved in technology now days.. Even things that we think of as old. I haven't looked up a book by the little code on the side since first grade probably. We just go to boarders and the computer practically grabs the book for you.. The world would be fine if not better off without some of the technology we have, but giving it up when everyone has it still sets you back way too far. If you can't beat them, join them, and then beat them! Lol.
